Supergirl Season 1 Episode 6 Recap: Red Faced

It’s alien versus android when our Maiden of Might tangles with Red Tornado this week on Supergirl. The great episode delves into the root of Kara’s personal and professional frustrations. She may be a heroine with extraordinary powers, but there is a vulnerability that allows us to relate to her. Even though Kara doesn’t consider herself “normal,” we see she goes through many of the things we do. She has to sit on the sidelines with a supportive smile on her face while her crush Jimmy is with another woman in Lucy. Cat is a demanding boss who is never … Continue reading

Recap: Fargo Season 2, Episode 8 – Cabin Fever

After last week’s killing spree, Fargo is stepping back a bit. Remember all of the unanswered questions from episode 6? Recap: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Episode 8 (Winter Finale): “My Mom, Greg’s Mom and Josh’s Sweet Dance Moves!” – The CW, original airdate Mon. 11/30/15 (For all Crazy Ex recaps, click here.) Tonight’s episode of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was the winter finale … it’ll on hiatus for a while (and I’ll update this blog once I know when it’s back). The good news is that the CW has ordered additional episodes — it’s a hit! — so it’s just a waiting game now. Tonight we met Greg’s mom, saw just how manipulative (and, er, horny) Rebecca’s mom can be, witnessed a few of … Continue reading

The Walking Dead Season 6 midseason finale recap: Start to finish (Not)

We all hate these midseason breaks, so Start to Finish is the crappiest title ever … even if it mirrors Deanna’s words. I don’t care. Especially with the little Negan teaser tossed in during Into the Badlands. I will spend the next two months vibrating through The Walking Dead withdrawals. Thanks, AMC! This midseason finale is like most season finales — a lot of craziness and zero resolution. But, I’m going to chalk this one up as the worst – or the best – or both. We all know the wall went down and an ass-load of walkers are on their … Continue reading

Dolly Parton’s Coat Of Many Colors: The country legend brings her most personal song to TV

I was a little kid growing up in a home filled with country music when Dolly Parton’s “Coat of Many Colors” became a radio hit in 1971. I already loved the story of the original coat thanks to Sunday school, and since I was a small-town girl with a loving mama, too, I fell hard for that song. I still get goosebumps when I hear it. This month, NBC brings the tender tune of a family’s love and resilience in the face of tragedy — personified by a little patchwork jacket — to television as part of a deal with the … Continue reading

On this week’s The Affair, we spend a 24-hour (or thereabouts) stretch with all four of our main characters as a hurricane bears down on New York, lending extra drama to the myriad bad decisions that abound. The Lockhart case doesn’t really factor in at all. It’s just four people and the choices they make … and what it might say about them. 1 p.m. After a quick look at Alison cleaning her fridge, we begin with Helen, who is in a wine bar, waiting for a Tinder date. Into the Badlands Episode 3 recap: “White Stork Spread Wings”

For me, this episode seals the deal, Into the Badlands fans. The groundwork is established, the characters have developed nicely, the story is moving along quickly, and I know the rest of the season will be brilliant. Episode three is filled with the usual hardcore fight sequences, tense moments of M.K.’s stupidly- stubborn and sneaky antics, and the looming doom that Quinn’s acute awareness (of exactly who’s pulling what) threatens to bring. Quinn’s war is waged without hesitation. As the episode opens, he and his Clippers descend on The Widow like ants on a dropped popsicle … yeah, the simile … Continue reading

Showtime’s “Spymasters” goes inside Langley

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has long been shrouded in secrecy and controversy, with much of what average people know about it gleaned from probably-not-entirely-accurate movies and TV shows. In recent years, concerns about the government spying not only on our enemies but also on our allies — and even on citizens — have put groups like the CIA into the spotlight more and more. The new Showtime documentary Spymasters — CIA in the Crosshairs looks to shed further light on the organization. The film, narrated by Homeland star Mandy Patinkin, was written by Chris Whipple, who also wrote the … Continue reading

Racing Extinction effectively chronicles natural devastation facing our planet

“Racing Extinction is required viewing for all citizens of the world,” said John Hoffman, executive vice president of Discovery Channel’s Documentaries and Specials division. The quote at first seemed like typical press-release hyperbole, but upon viewing the film, I have to agree. No matter what your political biases may be toward topics such as climate change, hunting endangered animals, destruction of natural habitats or other environmental issues, Racing Extinction should engage you with its sobering, at times bleak, look at the devastation facing our planet. It seems that in the “race” against extinction — not only the extinction of other … Continue reading

Survivor: Second Chance recap “Like Selling Your Soul to the Devil” Season 31, Episode 10 (original airdate Nov. 25): With Thanksgiving coming tomorrow, CBS graciously decided to treat us to a Survivor feast tonight with a two-hour episode that included two contestants going home. Rain, rain and more rain. Last week’s episode of Empire ended with Cookie and her sister Candice headed to Philly in search for their other sister Carol. Now that Cookie has to worry about her cookout event, she’s not worried about finding her sister Carol; especially if she’s going to have to search high and low. I guess it’s nice to know that this week’s episode shows Laura safe and practicing for the cookout with Hakeem. I definitely thought she was going to be bait for some twisted plan Anika had. Recap: The Affair Season 2 episode 8 — From the mouths of babes

This far into Season 2 of Showtime’s The Affair, I have to admit, I’m a little done with episodes that attempt to pass off wildly different versions of the same events as the mysterious workings of two separate minds. While this episode was intriguing — bringing Noah and Helen together for the most substantial amount of time since he bolted for the writers cabin — I gave up on figuring out how to meld the two versions into a probable truth. We learned some not-so-surprising stuff about Whitney in the front end of Helen’s parcel. After that: There was a book signing. Helen was there. Noah … Continue reading

Recap: Into the Badlands Episode 2 — Fist Like A Bullet

Into the Badlands airs Sunday nights at 10/9CT on AMC. It all begins with the most uncomfortable looking pair of black boots I’ve ever seen. It’s The Widow. She’s in a bar. It’s dingy, dark and full of go-go dancers, one of whom is using an angle grinder on her bustier. How creative. The Widow spots who she’s looking for. It’s her former Regent, Teague. The Widow’s not impressed by how he’s spending what he pilfered, but she’ll let bygones be bygones if he helps her out. He goes for his sword, but she kicks it away before he touches it. … Continue reading

According to Lifetime, the new season will focus on Miller’s new Los Angeles studio and a new “Mini Elite Competition Team” tutored by the older girls — presumably Kendall, Mackenzie, Maddie, Kalani and JoJo — who are ordered to focus on nothing but dance. Moment of silence for our beloved show, fellow fans of The Bastard Executioner. If you haven’t already heard, FX cancelled the series on Tuesday with creator Kurt Sutter’s reluctant blessing, citing the cost to make the ambitious series on location in Wales versus its unfortunately low live ratings. Jim Henson’s Turkey Hollow, Lifetime’s charming Thanksgiving film, almost didn’t get made. Jim Henson originally wrote the film’s treatment with longtime writing partner Jerry Juhl over four decades ago, but the project was shelved, and subsequently forgotten, when another of their projects became a huge success. “The original treatment is dated from 1968,” says Henson’s daughter Lisa, CEO of The Jim Henson Company. “By 1969, it was all hands on deck with Sesame Street.” So that treatment lingered in purgatory until it was recently rediscovered. “We came across this treatment,” Lisa recalls, “and I was so charmed by it. I wonder if actor Jake Maskall, who plays Cy spent his summer dodging spittle from fans of King Simon. This is one of the best TV villains we’ve had in a long time, and I have high hopes that becoming king will only make the depths that Cyrus is willing to sink even greater. I was surprised that The Royals didn’t receive any Emmy nominations, not for supporting actor (Maskall), not for leading actress (Hurley) and triple shocked that the series didn’t receive a … Continue reading

Into the Badlands premiere recap – “Fort”

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a martial arts series on TV. Hopefully, Into the Badlands will serve to reignite the genre, because I’ve been excited about it since I first caught an ad during TWD. Yeah, the idea of post-apocalyptic dystopia is all the rage these days, but this series presents it in a highly unique way. • MORE: AMC’s genre-bending “Into the Badlands” lives by the sword Prior to the premiere, I perused the interwebs to check out the show’s buzz. As with most new series, the reviews were mixed. So I wasn’t sure what to expect — … Continue reading

The Walking Dead recap Season 6 Episode 6: Always Accountable

Daryl! I’ve missed you! Super glad you’re OK! Sasha! Abraham! Good to see you guys, too! Look! The turn is just ahead, and the herd is following obediently behind. Nice work. You’re almost there. … Oh, wait. This is The Walking Dead. Bring on some unexpected a-holes with guns. All seems well, and the almost triumphant trio make the turn into a little burg of sorts. As bullets blast through their rear window, Sasha and Abraham duck. A car speeds up behind them, its occupants firing away. Daryl dumps his bike, but quickly recovers, pulling ahead of two other vehicles. The group … Continue reading

So long, Wicked City: ABC has slashed the show.

In last week’s recap of Wicked City, I noted that the nobody seems to be canceling anything this season, including Wicked City … but the show’s abymsally-low ratings have caught up to it. No more killing for Kent Grainger … that character is dead, along with his show, after just 3 episodes. Wicked City‘s timeslot has, for the time being, been filled with Shark Tank reruns. Bye, Felicia.

Do the Alaskan Bush People get paid? We asked!

Go Here For All Of Your Fish-Punching Alaskan Bush People Needs! The possibility had been on the table for a while, and I finally took up the opportunity to do a phone Q&A with the entire Brown family of Discovery Channel’s Alaskan Bush People. I didn’t know what to expect, and I wasn’t exactly sure what I’d do with the interview after it was done. I knew it definitely wouldn’t be a promotional puff piece. The Browns are a family with a lot of off-camera issues, and there are so many inconsistencies between what we’ve seen on TV and what’s been reported publicly, that I wouldn’t be … Continue reading

Recap: How to Get Away with Murder Season 2 Episode 8 — Hi, I’m Philip

#WhoshotAnnalise? That is the million dollar hashtag question that will be speculated about at the cyber water cooler known as Twitter for the next week waiting for the How to Get Away with Murder winter finale. Before the big reveal we had one last stop on this crazy train with Bonnie as an obvious suspect. Evidence mounted when she basically wished Annalise was dead. Then during this week’s flashback Bonnie is the focal point giving direction and looked to have been the one who sent Sinclair to her doom from high above. She was also absent most of the episode. … Continue reading

Empire Season 2 Episode 7 Recap: Making History

On the last episode of Empire, Cookie got frisky with her new head of security, Laz. Looks like she decided to do her work from Laz’s bed instead of actually showing up in the office. In fact, she hasn’t left his bed in three days. I don’t know if that’s romantic or creepy. I’m still confused as to how she hasn’t seen this huge longhorn on his back. Wouldn’t you question someone why they have that if you saw it? It might actually save Cookie’s life if she asks him about it seeing the longhorns kidnapped her son. At least … Continue reading

AMC’s genre-bending “Into the Badlands” lives by the sword

It’s hard to pin a label on AMC’s new six-part action drama series Into the Badlands, premiering Sunday, Nov. 15, at 10pm ET/PT. It has the dystopian future politics of The Hunger Games. It has the antiheroes of Westerns like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. It has the warrior’s spiritual journey of Kung Fu. It has themes of family bloodlines and ambition like in Game of Thrones or Shakespeare’s history plays. It has the moral codes of classic samurai films, and fight sequences reminiscent of The Matrix and Hong Kong martial arts movies. Into the Badlands fuses together … Continue reading

Discovery Channel Alaskan Bush People recap: Block and Tackle

Go Here For All Of Your Fish-Punching Alaskan Bush People Needs! “If they can stay alive. It will be the biggest summer of their lives,” says our dear narrator. No, he’s not talking about some new teen slasher movie. He’s talking about Season 3 of Alaskan Bush People, premiering on Discovery Channel Wednesday, Nov. 11, with “Block and Tackle,” which disappointingly has nothing to do with football. But it has everything to do with summertime in Southeast Alaska. The Brown kids while away the days in flights of fancy, playing a game called “It,” which disappointingly has nothing to do with terrifying clowns. … Continue reading

Survivor recap episode 8: How did they not plan for an immunity idol?

Survivor: Second Chance recap “You Call, We’ll Haul,” Season 31, Episode 8 (original airdate Nov. 11): It’s day 20 and we’re down to 12. “Brilliant plan. Executed to perfection,” Andrew Savage tells Jeremy. He’s referring to voting off Kass. Their plan for the go forward  is to keep their alliance intact and stay the course picking off the Ciera’s, Abi’s and Wentworth’s. That, however, wouldn’t be the case. Reward Challenge Two teams of six were formed. They need to paddle and navigate a row boat, while grabbing some obnoxiously sized crates and then stack them in a puzzle pattern onshore. … Continue reading

The Bastard Executioner episode 9 recap: “The Bernadette Maneuver”

It would be easier to accept that there is but one more episode of The Bastard Executioner Season 1 if a Season 2 was confirmed and there weren’t so much ground left to cover. Yes, I know … plenty of folks have railed against the show’s proudly bold blending of history and fiction, Annora’s weird accent and nature, and the brutality of the violence, particularly toward women. But not one of these issues is remotely unique to this series, and I’ve grown attached to trying to decipher the twisty tale and particularly to the show’s core cast and the complex people they play. And … Continue reading
