Ash vs Evil Dead Episode 1 recap: “El Jefe”

Happy Halloween, and welcome to our first Ash vs Evil Dead recap. Ash is back, baby! Director Sam Raimi kicked off the series Ash vs Evil Dead in fine form, with his legendary manic camerawork, some references to the Evil Dead films, and plenty of the humor (particularly from Bruce Campbell’s performance) and gore that we’ve come to know and love from the cult classic films. When I talked with Campbell earlier this summer on the set of Ash vs Evil Dead, he told me that the decision to make the series a half-hour one was “in order to keep … Continue reading

“A big jolly splatterfest” — Talking “Ash vs Evil Dead” with Bruce Campbell and Lucy Lawless

It was just past the first day of winter in New Zealand when I arrived at a location called Riverhead, just outside of Auckland, to begin watching the filming of the new Starz series Ash vs Evil Dead, which airs Saturdays beginning Oct. 31. Coming from the northern U.S., I didn’t find the weather to be quite what I was used to as “winter.” It was very pleasant: sunny, temps in the high 50s, low 60s Fahrenheit. The nice climate added to the loveliness of the filming location, a scenic pine forest. As a fan of the original Evil Dead … Continue reading

Jane the Virgin Chapter 25 recap: Prerequisites and Co-parenting

Traditions in the Villanueva family are very important. That’s why in this week’s episode of Jane the Virgin, everything needs to be in place for Mateo’s baptism. One small problem is that Rafael hasn’t spoken with Michael about being Mateo’s godfather since Jane revealed that she loved both of them. Rafael still seems okay with the plan but we’ll have to see what Michael says. Even more importantly, Zapata (Audrey Esparza, Public Morals) was becoming a snitch to pay off her gambling debts. Confused or intrigued? Let’s dive into this week’s episode to try to make sense of it all. The beginning of “Cede Your Soul” looked like something out of a soft-core, made-for-Cinemax movie. The Affair Season 2 Episode 4 recap — Parental advisories

I’ll admit, this week’s episode of Showtime’s The Affair — told from the perspectives of imploding marrieds Noah and Helen — was a head-scratcher for me. Would Helen really unravel in such borderline slapstick fashion after 45 years of being the very model of enviable cool? Would Noah — no matter how much of a lovestruck egomaniac he may be — really watch his son writhing in agony on the bathroom floor of a cheap hotel room and not make a beeline for the hospital? This Sunday, National Geographic Channel and Mental Floss are partnering for a 2-hour live event to give us a fascinating look at an awake deep brain stimulation surgery, in Brain Surgery Live With Mental Floss. For the first time on U.S. Television, we’ll see live coverage from an operating room (at UH Case Medical Center in Cleveland) as 49-year-old veteran Greg Grindley, who suffers from early-onset Parkinson’s Disease, undergoes this surgery. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a procedure used to treat debilitating neurological symptoms (including Parkinson’s) by implanting electrodes that block electrical signals from specific areas in the brain. During … Continue reading

The City of Angels Is Hardly Angelic in ABC’s Wicked City

L.A.’s Sunset Strip was where people went to see and be seen in the early 1980s — but the glitz and glamour had a dark side, which is the backdrop for the first season of ABC’s gritty new crime anthology, Wicked City. The series will focus on a new case in a different era each season, but will remain in L.A., “a place where people are slightly blinded by their own ambition [which] makes for an easier world for nefarious characters to operate within,” explains Jeremy Sisto (Suburgatory), who plays detective Jack Roth on the series. Season 1 revolves around … Continue reading

“What the hell have you guys been doing for 30 years?” Marty McFly and Doc Brown visit 2015 and Jimmy Kimmel

In a nice coda to yesterday’s Back to the Future Day, Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd showed up in character as Marty McFly and Doc Brown on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The duo burst onto stage during Kimmel’s monologue in their famed DeLorean time machine, arriving from the year 1985, and exited the car to a standing ovation from the crowd, Marty in his trademark vest and Doc in his hazmat suit. When Kimmel greeted them, Marty asked, “Who are you?” When informed they were in a middle of a talk show, Doc asked in astonishment, “What happened to Johnny Carson?” … Continue reading

Empire Season 2 Episode 5 Recap: You’ve Been Marked

If you’ll recall on last week’s episode of Empire, Lucious and his sly dog of an attorney Thirsty, placed Vernon’s rotting corpse in Roxanne Ford’s car. As horrifying as that may sound, it worked out in Lucious’ favor. All the charges against Lucious were dropped and Vernon’s death was made out to be a suicide. I’m beginning to worry about the life lessons that this show is teaching. Be smart, kiddos! Following through with what he said, for once, Lucious has made Andre president of Gutter Life Records. Instead of celebrating with everyone, it appears that Andre has a new … Continue reading

Face Off Season 9 episode 13 recap: Movie Magic Part 1

Face Off Season 9 episode 13 begins with the usual reality show “blah, blah, blah I’m stressed out & miss my family so here – talk to them on FaceTime so we can see who is bolstered by this & who cries.” Face Off is one of the nicest reality shows on TV, so the whole “humanize the contestants” seems really unnecessary. These people already seem nice, so I really don’t need to see them getting emotional with their loved ones to let me know that. But then again, I never like the “family moment” portion of reality TV even … Continue reading

VOD Spotlight: Jurassic World

The majestic landscapes seen in Jurassic Park have become familiar to moviegoers — the  iconic images of massive creatures again roaming the Earth set the bar high for the production team behind Jurassic World. For the team, returning to “Isla Nublar” meant returning to Hawaii, where the green environment and majestic mountaintops substituted for Costa Rica. The crew discovered that the majority of the original locations were relatively untouched, affording the ability to step back into that visual world seamlessly, without extensive CGI to replicate settings. For producer Frank Marshall, returning to Hawaii decades later felt like stepping back in … Continue reading

Recap: Blindspot Season 1, Episode 5 – Both Sides of the Law

So is Jane Doe (Jaimie Alexander, Kyle XY) really Taylor Shaw or what? Five episodes in, I don’t think we have a more clear answer. While science seems to be contradicting a bit, a new set of flashbacks could be steering us in one direction. Plus, Weller (Sullivan Stapleton, Strike Back) seems so sure, and really, is that guy ever wrong? Episode 5, “Split The Law,” kicks off with a guy hailing a cab. That seems pretty normal, but he wants to go the Empire State Building in the middle of the night. That’s not the bizarre thing, though. Once … Continue reading

Again, this episode, “Before The Law,” reminds us that this is “a true story,” but names have been changed “at the request of the survivors.” This information is being typed over the screen as we get a glimpse of this season’s all-star cast … as well as a dead pig. Greg’s still, for whatever reason, into Rebecca, and Rebecca’s still crazy funny. Side note: Before I dive into the recap, can I just say how happy I am to have a show with an opening sequence? After last week’s The Walking Dead Season 6 opener, I was interested to see what others had to say, so I took a stroll through the interwebs. I was surprised by so much negative commentary, from groaning about too much confusing black and white stuff to swearing off the series forever. To those who didn’t like the flip-flopping, I say shake it off. And for those who decided to completely pull the plug, I can only feel pity… With that said, Episode 2 is an ass kicker! Supergirl on CBS — Melissa Benoist soars as Greg Berlanti’s latest TV superhero

Arguably, I’m too old and much too fond of PBS to even notice the new CBS dramedy Supergirl. I like Supergirl anyway. I like it a lot. Much of the credit goes to series star Melissa Benoist, who calls upon the same sweet-meets-steely spunk she displayed as Glee’s cheerleader target Marley Rose to play Superman’s equally gifted cousin Kara Zor-El. Yeah, I was probably too old for Glee, too, but I love a good tale about “odd women out” who find their own power — be it in a high-school auditorium or on another planet. And I love that co-executive producer Greg Berlanti (also the … Continue reading
