Survivalist Mick Dodge Talks New Reality Show

Meet the man who has stepped out of the modern world to live among the trees in Washington's Hoh Rainforest. Survivalist Mick Dodge joined HuffPost Live to share details about his wilderness lifestyle and his new National Geographic reality TV series "The Legend of Mick Dodge."

Twenty-five years ago Dodge found a home and a new family of mountain dwellers in the Hoh Rainforest. It began when the pain of the modern world got to him... quite literally. In an interview on the Mother Nature Network, Dodge shared his foot deformity and back discomfort which ultimately led him to the rainforest. "Not only were my feet healing, but my back pain, neck pain, and most of all my heart pain disappeared," he said.

Bored by contemporary living and the use of technology, Dodge told host Josh Zepps that his lifestyle brings him "extreme joy" and finds it a "fascinating rhythm, going in and out of society."

As part of his reality series, Dodge's life is documented by producers and cameramen. Though they bring some of the modern-day world into his home, Dodge believes “the human animal is a storyteller.”

“The way they present stories on television is fascinating to me. I was learning a tremendous amount from them in doing it," he said. "What was really powerful for me was to watch the shift of the cameramen. They began to grow beards and go barefoot. They were just touching into this mountain which is just a powerful, powerful teacher to me."
