Scandal recap – “A Door Marked Exit”

Scandal Recap – “A Door Marked Exit”

Intensity-wise, the episode took a step back compared to last week’s episode. However, “A Door Marked Exit” found a way to tie up loose ends while setting the stage for some of next season’s plot lines.

It began where the last episode left off, with Vice President Sally Langston (Kate Burton) still in shock over the murder of her husband, Daniel Douglas (Jack Coleman). Her thoughts drifted between the fight and the aftermath as she tried to conceptualize what had happened. She called Cyrus Beane (Jeff Perry), who hired Quinn Perkins (Lindsay Dwyer) and her new B613 associate, Charlie (George Newbern) to clean up the mess and sew up the stab wounds. After concealing the murder, her campaign manager tries to use the death as an opportunity to look good in the polls. Only with proud statements of future success repeatedly ignored does he realize that she killed her husband. Despite the death, it still looks like she will run for the presidency

On the Eli Pope (Joe Morton) front, we saw that he was about to be attacked by a syringe of poison by Quinn. However, when given the opportunity to pounce, Quinn flinched and failed to attack him. He then went on his way, until his car was ambushed by two cars, which took him straight to President Grant (Tony Goldwyn) in the Pentagon. The questioning sequence turned in, not only a view of the power struggle between each other, but also the best acting performance I’ve seen the series. President Grant quietly showed some ego to Eli, using his power position in the questioning to brag about his sexual encounters and love for Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington). Eli did not take too kindly too this. As nonchalant as Eli’s character has been in tense situations, he exploded with anger, explaining that he earned everything in his life including his daughter, and that the president was just a rich snob who will always be a failure and that he only wanted Olivia because she was a door marked exit. Olivia eventually worked her way into the Pentagon after explaining to President Grant that Operation Remington wasn’t her father’s wrongdoing. She then realized that he was tricked into shooting down the plane by Maya Pope (Khandi Alexander). Maya told him there was a bomb on the plane so he took her off and shot it down, only to realize that there was no bomb. He was released soon after only to find out that his position was taken by Jake Ballard.

Quinn continued her string of bad days with the failed attack of Eli as I mentioned earlier. She then rushed to a bathroom and used the rod from the paper towel dispenser to pull out the newly revealed tracker put in her mouth by Huck where a tooth once sat. With all that had happened in the last week, she broke down and passed out in her bed, just wanting a chance to return home. When Charlie told her it was alright to leave, she went straight back to Pope & Associates, only to realize that she wasn’t exactly welcomed home with open arms. Even though he took her teeth out and kept her trapped in her home, she still looked for some forgiveness from Huck. However, Huck used this situation as a chance to show his “graces,” explaining that it weren’t for Olivia, she would be dead right now. Quinn, now fully accepting that she couldn’t return to her past, returned home and had sex with Charlie.

Potential Stories for Spring Season (starts February 27, 2014)

  • Maya Lewis being alive and back in Washington, DC.

  • Quinn’s role as the outsider and potential threat to Pope and Associates.

  • Vice President Langston’s potential run in the next presidency with audio about the killing waiting to be released.

  • Jake Ballard’s (Scott Foley) new role as the head of B613.

  • Eli Pope’s future role in the show (potential ally?).

Memorable Quotes

Huck to Quinn:

“If it wasn’t for Olivia, I’d kill you right now.”

Vice President Langston to her campaign manager about her deceased husband:

“He’s a godless sinner who deserved what he got.”
