Why I Quit My Finance Job To Travel The World (WATCH)

When your personal values no longer match your career, it may be a sign that it's time for a change.

Anne Pfeifer discovered that her values no longer matched that of her finance career when she watched a close friend miss the opportunity to say goodbye to her sick father because her project managers insisted they were too busy for employees to take time off. He died while she was on the plane on her way to see him.

"That crystallized many issues specifically around balancing this crazy lifestyle with really important priorities like health and family and being with the people you love," the Yale University Ph.D. candidate told HuffPost Live's Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani. "That was the moment I really realized this job wasn’t compatible with the things that were most important to me."

It took a leap of faith for Pfeifer to leave the financial industry without another job in tow. She spent the next year traveling the world, and credits the life-changing trip for helping her to reroute her life.

"I was giving up a job, I was giving up having health insurance, I was giving up the certainty of having future employment, and so to me I think that was a real plunge into nothing because I didn’t know what would happen," she said. "But it took that moment of stepping away from this job to really give me time to think about what it is that I want to do with my future."
