As we enter the new year, we are inundated with thoughts about things we want to achieve in the next year. Often we set our sights so high that by mid-January we have given up. But that's no reason to stop trying! Here are 10 ideas and thoughts that anyone can achieve.
1. Let Your Light Shine:
The first step in setting any resolution is to share it with others. Many people tend to keep their dreams and goals to themselves, out of fear that they will be judged. Unfortunately, hiding your goals tells the subconscious mind that we are not actually serious about achieving them. Goals are like plants; they must see the light of day if they are to survive and thrive.
2. Don't Bully Yourself:
Self-criticism is one of the largest obstacles to achieving any dream. The brain will highlight or even exaggerate a weakness in an effort to protect us from stepping out of our comfort zone. You are much more powerful than you realize, but the trick is to get out of your own way. This year make a promise that you will be kinder to yourself.
The next time you catch yourself being self-critical, observe the thought and then use a positive affirmation to counteract it.
3. Get Off The Couch:
Take in a museum, go on a road trip outside of your zip code, or explore something new. Make a commitment this year to being open to new experiences. Studies show that people who try new things are happier, and lead a more enriched life.
4. Eyes On Your Own Paper:
With the prevalence of social media outlets, it's easy to fall into a spiral of comparing your life to others. This year, let your mantra be that you are on your own unique journey, and comparing yourself to others no longer serves you.
5. Saving Is Sexy:
The things that we need, and the things that we are told we're supposed to want are very different. You do not need to overspend to feel like you are good enough, you already are good enough. Pay close attention to the reasons that you are purchasing something. Do you actually need another pair of shoes, or are you just trying to make yourself feel better?
This year, really try to monitor your impulse buys. Rather than making the purchase, invest that money in your future.
6. No More Debbie Downers:
We've all got that person in our lives who can find the negative in any situation. Whether you know it or not, we are constantly being influenced by the energy of people around us. Commit to surrounding yourself with people who inspire, uplift, and motivate you. Your community is a reflection of your consciousness, so invest time in people who you admire.
7.Turn Fear Into Inspiration:
Fear is simply a goal in a terrible disguise. When a fear presents itself, we have a choice. We can engage in the contraction and allow it to hold us back, or we can transform it into an opportunity to become better. Examine repetitive fears in your life. Fear is a natural human response, and we all experience it. The trick is to reprogram our minds and take the leap anyway.
8. Be Creative:
Every human being has a creative and artistic side, but you may not be nurturing this aspect of your personality to it's maximum potential. Singing, painting, or cooking are only a few ways to express yourself. This year, commit to having a strong outlet for the creative aspect of our being. Art makes our world brighter and more magical.
9. Spread The Love:
I counsel a lot of people who have lost loved ones, and one of the most common things I hear is the regret that they did not express their feelings more often. Make it a priority in 2015 to tell your loved ones how you feel about them. When sending your kids off to school, ending a text message to a good friend, or simply having dinner with your partner, tell them how much they mean to you. Don't make the mistake of assuming that they know, use your words and tell them! Saying "I love you" expands your heart while deepening the connection to those around you.
10. Give Back:
Small charitable gestures have such a positive impact on the world. Smiling and giving an extra buck to the waitress at the diner, or being friendly to your elderly neighbor can literally change their whole day. Giving back to the planet is a dynamic and powerful exchange of energy.
You don't have to spend an afternoon at a soup kitchen, or read books to needy kids to make a difference (although it would be wonderful if you did). This year, find a way to volunteer your energy and make it a priority to give back. Whether it's money, time, furniture, clothing, we all have a way to help those in need.
