Many women have an age in mind that, to them, seems like a frightening milestone. For some, it's 40. Others, 50 or 60. But 76-year-old author Jean Houston has a secret about aging that all women should know.
While being mic'd for her interview with Oprah on "Super Soul Sunday," Houston, who was 75 at the time, makes a casual remark about her age and how she doesn't give much thought to how she looks. Oprah comments on Houston's beauty -- "I had read that you were 75. When I saw you, I went, 'I wonder, did I read that correctly?'" -- and asks the author and scholar whether the aging process bothered her at all.
Houston says that she never worried about turning a certain milestone age -- and still doesn't. "I never think about it. Never, ever," she tells Oprah. "I mean, there's so much to do and to be."
Having had a lifetime of experiences, Houston reveals that her later years had more to offer. "I find... the second half of life to be the most exciting, the most interesting," she says.
"When did it get good for you?" Oprah asks.
"It started to get really good at 60," Houston answers, smiling. "Really good."
Oprah, who turned 60 on Wednesday, seems pleasantly surprised by Houston's answer. "Really?" she asks Houston. "How so?"
"Your heart-fullness increases... in that you have a generalized affection," Houston tells her. "You're always looking for both the deeper aspect of anything that you see as well as what is actually [there]. And you try to be of use."
Also during the interview, Houston shares one of the most important lessons she learned in all her seven decades, telling a personal story about her father, a successful comedy writer.
"Super Soul Sunday" airs Sundays at 11 a.m. ET on OWN.
