'Super Soul Sunday' Guests Brené Brown, Phil Jackson And More Share Their Personal Prayers (VIDEO)

Whether you call it prayer, meditation or daily affirmation, people often recite the same words when they intend to connect with a higher power. On an episode of Oprah's "Super Soul Sunday," several spiritual guests shared the quotes and phrases that they use as their own personal prayers.

Vulnerability researcher Brené Brown finds inspiration in a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "'Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that,'" she quotes. "'My prayer is for love and light."

For "Zen master" and former NBA coach Phil Jackson, a Sufi prayer acts as his affirmation. "I have a simple prayer that I use," he tells Oprah. "'Oh thou, sustainer of our bodies, hearts and souls, bless all that we thankfully receive.'"

Poet Mark Nepo says prayer is all about listening and tells Oprah that his personal prayer is a question. "'Of what use and bridge can I be?'" Nepo asks.

Also in the above video, bestselling author Dani Shapiro reveals the four simple phrases that can revolutionize how you think of prayer and how repeating them to others makes it impossible for you to feel alone. Plus, "Scandal" actress Kerry Washington share the only three answers she believes God ever gives.

"Super Soul Sunday" airs Sundays at 11 a.m. ET on OWN.
